Cassino

Cassino is located in the eastern part of Lazio, but in the vicinity of Campania. Do not miss a visit to the famous Montecassino Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 529 by St. Benedict of Norcia.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the abbey was a thriving cultural center thanks to its libraries, archives, schools, writers and illumination, which transcribed and preserved many works of antiquity.

The most illustrious of its abbots was probably Desire, the future Pope Victor III, who around the 'eleventh century completely rebuilt the abbey and the church adorned with precious frescoes and mosaics.
